An article by Nancy Cook-Lauer in the Feb. 16 edition of the Hawaii Tribune-Herald stated: “(Dennis) Onishi discarded his original plan to use money donated by Na Leo ‘O Hawaii public television after he encountered opposition.” This statement is incorrect.
The funds I proposed using for the food bank donation are coming from the council’s OCE (other current expenses) account. I had no intention of touching the contribution from Na Leo ‘O Hawaii.
Due to concerns expressed by the president of Na Leo ‘O Hawaii in his oral testimony and email that I received from him, I amended the resolution to remove the three “Whereas” clauses which made reference to the generosity of Na Leo ‘O Hawaii.
Unfortunately, on Feb. 15 I found out that $25,000 had been encumbered from the council’s miscellaneous contract account for legal services. Because of this, I intend to also use the council’s mileage, auto allowance and equipment repairs account for the food bank donation.

Support for Rush
For more than 20 years, Rush Limbaugh has been, and continues to be, a comfort and inspiration in my life. Thanks to him, I have been encouraged to be the best I can be, to avoid the trap of government largess and dependency, and to give back to the community with my time, talent and treasury.
It is with sadness that I learn that people will no longer have the convenience of being able to tune into a public broadcast of his daily message. One can always count on Rush to counter the disinformation and propaganda of the liberal media with truth and light.
However, I am relieved that I have finally been motivated to subscribe to his website, where I can still hear his shows at the times of my own choosing. For this, I guess I have to thank Chris Leonard.
I know that Rush does not need me to say this, but I thank God that at least we still have our basic freedoms of speech in this great nation of ours. As long as we still have people like Rush, there is hope yet for the American republic.

Another reason to allow sick citizens to use cannabis (marijuana) for pain that doesn’t get mentioned (“Medical marijuana bill goes to the House for consideration,” March 7) is because it is biblically correct, since God indicates He created all the seed-bearing plants, saying they are all good, on literally the very first page (Genesis 1:11-12 and 29-30).
The only biblical restriction placed on cannabis is to accept it with thankfulness (1 Timothy 4:1-5).
And, “But whoever has the world’s goods, and sees his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him?” (1 John 3:17).
Further, many people know cannabis is the tree of life, and the last page of the Bible indicates the leaves of the tree of life are for the healing of the nations. Jesus risked jail to heal the sick.
